April Fool’s Day Snowstorm

My favorite personal memory

In Vermont you get snow, a lot of snow — really — a whole lot of snow! Yet schools rarely close unless the snow is very deep — or very unexpected — or both!

For years, prior to living in Vermont, my son and I played April Fool tricks on each other — usually along the line of trying to get the other to look at some imaginary object or some event that was not actually happening. It was one of those “gotcha” things we did on April Fool’s Day.

On April 1 of our first year in Vermont, there WAS an unexpected 2-foot snowstorm, a major nor’ easter, and school WAS canceled.

I recall that school started at about 7:25 AM — and I knew he would not be happy if he got up, took a shower, and ate breakfast — only to find out he could have slept in — so I woke him around 5:30 AM to tell him there was no school due to a snowstorm, to go back to sleep, and enjoy sleeping in.

His reply was along the lines of “haha I know it’s April Fool and I am not falling for that.”

I suggested he look out the window — but as that had been one of our usual “gotchas” he refused. He got up and…
