Below are a few things that became EVENTS — and to me, that changed the nature of the thing.

Good? Bad? I don’t know — that’s an individual opinion — and I have mine!

Times Square on December 31

I grew up in Queens, New York City, many decades ago — and once we hit our teen years, my friends and I went into Manhattan as often as possible even though I recall we were “told” not to do that. But from school and family trips we knew how to take the bus and train to get there — so off we went!

Times Square was a draw — fun signs and billboards, places to eat, and lots and lots of people…. but then Manhattan was always more peopled than even the busier parts of Queens.

I’m sure as we got older [high school and college] we were there on some New Year's Eves. I really can't remember, but I think we were there for the ball drop at least a few times. It wasn't a big deal — and as it was full of tourists, we probably saw the ball drop…
